The story of Be More
![]()
Be More's story begins with the Uthando Foundation. This foundation was started in January 2004 by Michel Groenenstijn, after spending three months as a volunteer in South Africa. Inspired by the work and the children there he decided to keep helping the children he met and other children in South Africa.
Uthando is a big success and has made a considerable difference to the projects it supports in South Africa. The rebuilding of Agape orphanage for example, after it was destroyed by a fire in 2005, was for a large part made possible by the work and donors of Uthando. Another example is Bobbi Bear, an organization that upholds the rights of sexually abused children, that has started a number of new programmes thanks to the support of Uthando.
In 2006 the decision to start Be More, a new organization based on Uthando's work, was made. The projects in South Africa showed an increasing need for volunteers. Moreover, the growing group of donors repeatedly asked for ways to make a real, tangible difference to Uthando's projects. The insight and understanding gained from working with approximately 200 former volunteers of Agape orphanage led to the founding of Be More in May 2006.
