I Care Program Costs
It costs I Care a certain amount of money to host volunteers. We look to you to raise and donate at least this minimum amount to Be More so we can pass it on to Ithemba.
A detailed explanation of what makes up these costs can be found below. An explanation of why it costs you money to volunteer at a development project, can be found at the bottom of this page.

How are minimum donations determined?
Minimum recommended donation amounts are determined as follows:
- We assume an average of 3 volunteers per four weeks. This may sometimes be more, sometimes less. Whenever there are more than 3 volunteers on average, the possible extra donation will always go directly towards I Care. Your donation is therefore never lost.
- Accommodation is rented by I Care and located in Port Elizabeth. It is close to shops, restaurants and the beach.
- The transport consists of a rental car that is available to the volunteers. Transport also includes your airport pick-up and drop-off.
- The program is designed to make sure I Care can count on volunteers for a long time. This is the only way to guarantee continuity for the children and the project. This means that part of your donation is reserved for future expenses.
- It costs Be More £ 200 per volunteer per four week period. See the explanation below for more information on this.
All amounts are based on previous experience. Minimum recommended donation amounts are reviewed on a yearly basis and updated when necessary. What is included in these costs can be found under program.
Why?
Why should it cost you money to work voluntarily for someone else? Shouldn't people be glad that you are coming at all? These are questions a lot of volunteers ask, and rightly so.
The answer is actually quite simple: the projects you are going to work at have very little money, even to cover their own expenses. However much they may need your help, I Care can not afford to cover the costs of hosting volunteers. Therefore, these expenses are covered by volunteer donations. However, Be More can give you all kinds of tips to try and raise the minimum recommended donation for your program, for example by having it sponsored by a company.
Be More's Costs
As you can see in the overview above, it also costs Be More a certain amount of money to run the volunteer program. This includes the costs of promotion, coaching, placement and management of the project. We understand and recognize the feeling that many volunteers have, of "not wanting to spend money on that, I'd rather go straight to the project". However understandable, this is an idea that only works for the short term. Without promotion and management, our projects may not have any volunteers, or the program may not not run well. The projects themselves would be unable to continue into the long term and we could risk losing the program entirely.
Be More will of course use your donation responsibly. As a charity we are 100% open and transparent about our finances, as can be read in the annual report that we publish each year.
