Volunteer Activities at Ithemba
What does a volunteer do at Ithemba?
- In the classroom: Ithemba has four classes; as a volunteer you can help out with several activities such as taking care of the children, teaching, feeding them, etc. You will work with an Ithemba staff member and any personal input and creative ideas will be very appreciated!
- Personal attention: Volunteers are there to give meaningful, personal attention to the children. Having a conversation, playing sports together or just drawing a picture together can make a big difference. This type of interaction can stimulate a child to be social and to learn.
Organic garden: To make sure that there is enough food, the centre has its own organic garden. Both children and staff happily take care of this garden and volunteers can help them with this. - Maintenance: Together with the other volunteers you can help to maintain and improve the day centre. Getting the children to help out and learn how to fix things as well is even better!
- Fundraising: Like many other organizations, Ithemba is partly dependent on donations. You can help organize fundraising events or seek out sponsorship and gifts in kind from local businesses in South Africa.
- Other things… The most difficult category, nonetheless an important one; taking care of necessary chores. For instance, going to the GP with a sick child, paying a quick visit to the pharmacist for plasters, or organizing a field trip for the children. There are lots of little jobs that will pop up during your trip and all are an excellent way of getting to know the local culture!
